Abolition of Nuclear Weapons
11/7/1998
The existence of nuclear weapons threatens all life on Earth, and their use would be a tragedy of incomprehensible proportions.
The end of the Cold War has opened a window of opportunity to end this terrible nuclear threat, but that window has started to close with the recent proliferation of nations acquiring nuclear capabilities. Now is the time for all people to come together and agree to create a more peaceful world.
To this end, Mount Toby Friends Meeting of Massachusetts, of the United State of America, joins the endorsers of the Abolition 2000 Statement in putting forth the the following urgent proposals:
1) That all nuclear states take their weapons off alert status, separate all warheads from their delivery systems, and pledge an unconditional policy of no first use of these weapons;
2) That our president initiate multilateral negotiations leading to the conclusion, by the year 2000, of an International Nuclear Weapons Convention which would prohibit the development, production, testing, deployment, stockpiling, transfer, threat, or use of nuclear weapons, and provide for their timely elimination.
For the sake of life on Earth, we ask everyone to actively support these proposals.
