Pacifism

A letter from Mt. Toby Meeting to the President, members of Congress, and local and Five College newspapers, approved by Meeting for Business in 1/80:

We as members of the Mt. Toby Monthly Meeting of the Religious Society of Friends wish to remind ourselves and others of our traditional position against war and violence:

We utterly deny all outward wars and strife and fightings with outward weapons, for any end and under any pretence whatsoever. And this is our testimony to the whole world.

-- George Fox, 1661

Oh, that we who declare against wars and acknowledge our trust to be in God only, may walk in the Light and therein examine our foundation and motives in holding great estates! May we look upon our treasures and the furniture of our houses and the garments in which we array ourselves and try whether the seeds of war have any nourishment in these our possessions or not.

--John Woolman, 1769

We still support these positions. In particular we are opposed to the growing militarism in this country and the move to reinstate the selective service system.
