Peace
and Social Concerns Committee, 11/29/18
Present: Beth A, Jane J, Diane C, Ka R, Daniel G,
Roger C, David G
1. We
began in a period of silence and worship sharing on a statement describing the
Peace Testimony and what it is not.
2. We
agreed to cosponsor the Human Rights Day on December 9. Roger will contact
Martha S to tell her.
3. Jane
will create a statement in support of the Jewish Community. She will send it to our committee for
approval or amending, and when it is approved, Roger will send it to the Clerk
for the December meeting for business.
This must be accomplished by this Sunday 12/2 to get on the December
agenda.
4. Roger
will provide us with information about the BDS campaign to inform our
discussion of it in our next meeting.
5. Ka
has talked with Jeff of the Resistance Center and is not clear whether he can
come to our Dec 9 meeting for business. If he is willing to
come, Beth will contact the Clerk by Sunday at the latest to ask that our
funding proposal for the Center be a budget item on the 12/9 agenda.
6. Letter
writing: it did not happen by young people in November for various
reasons. We should think through that
suggestion more carefully for the future, in particular, consulting with parents. The Race and Class group will do it in January. The Climate Witness Committee is willing to do it
in the future. For December, Beth will find the letter writer.
7. We
will put off the Handbook issue for later.
8. Diane
reports that several people have said they would help with refreshments for our
concert series. She suggests that the refreshments arrangements will be
simplified in the future. We approve.
9. Ka
will see if Will Snyder would offer to tell the meeting about the national FCNL
meeting which he will attend.
10.
David A and Andrea C will come to a
P&SC meeting to talk about nuclear issues.
Beth will consult with them about a date when that can happen.
11.
In December we will meet on 12/20, and
at that meeting we will decide about future dates.
12.
David suggests that massive public
demonstrations might get De Leo to let the legislature vote on the Safe
Communities Act. The trouble is that DeLeo is not running the legislature like a democratic
institution and it seems unlikely that this will change while he is in power.
13.
For the Friends Concerns: Other
Organizations arrangements, we agreed that if an organization has been approved
by our committee and the Meeting before, it will not be necessary for its
advocate to come back to present it again to this committee. An advocate must still be found to make a
presentation to the meeting for business.
14.
Dan reports that the 11:40 hour gave us
March 31 for a presentation about the Truth School with Andrea A if
possible. He will ask the committee for
a second 11:40 hour also.
15.
We ended in a period of silence.
