Peace and Social Concerns, Monday, February 5, 2018
Present: Dan G., Andy G., David G., Frank G., Diane C., Beth A.
Andy came to us with a proposal to ask Meeting for Business to sponsor a membership in the Amherst Food Co-op as a Friends Concerns – Other Organizations donations. Memberships cost $175 and sponsors pay $100 of that for a person who could otherwise not afford membership. The committee approved this but encouraged Andy to discuss the proposal with a wide variety of other Friends before Meeting for Business.
David raised discussion of the Safe Communities Act. Frank will bring the idea to ION. Beth will research the current status of the bill, which would protect undocumented immigrants from being turned over to ICE by local police.
Diane will take care of the letter-writing on February 18.
Beth went to a conference on US foreign military bases and made a report. She is working to organize a presentation by Pat Hynes at Mount Toby in the spring. Pat Hynes directs the Traprock Center for Peace and Justice.
